Gentle Children's Dentistry

Comprehensive care for your children’s teeth, throughout all stages of development.

It’s never too early to begin teaching good oral hygiene to your children. Behaviours learnt when they’re young tend to stick with them throughout life.

The need for this is increasingly important with tooth decay among children on the rise, with more than half of all 6-year old’s having some decay in their baby and adult teeth, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Kicking off at the age of 1 at the latest, or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing, your child should see their dentist regularly and understand that visiting them is an important part of growing up. At Shire Doctors and Dentists, we offer no-gap dental check-up clean for your children under the age of 12. If you receive benefits such as Family Tax Benefit payments, you can take advantage of government programs such as the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

At Shire Doctors and Dentists we offer

Baby Teeth Matter

Yes, they eventually fall out to make way for adult teeth but that doesn’t mean that they are not important. If decay causes them to be removed, it can cause crowding problems with their adult teeth to emerge.

Fissure Sealants

Some teeth tend to have depressions and grooves which are difficult for the child to clean. Sealants are used to fill these depressions to deter tooth decay. Sealants are tooth-coloured resins which are applied to the chewing surface area of the tooth.
Application of the sealant is quick, painless (injection not required), and can be effective for many years if your child practices good oral hygiene and avoids biting hard objects.

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards are coverings worn over teeth, to protect teeth and mouths from injury. If your child plays contact sports or even non-contact but high-risk recreational activities they’ll need proper mouth protection.
Custom-fitted mouth protectors are individually designed to provide the ultimate protection. First, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and a mouth guard is then moulded over the model using a special material. Due to the use of the special material and because of the extra time and work involved, this custom-made mouth guard is more expensive than the over the counter types, but it provides the most comfort and best fit and protection. An ill-fitted mouth guard could be more harmful than going without one!
