45 to 49-Year-Old Health Checks at Your Women’s Health GP

Statistically, between the ages of 45 and 49, many people begin to show symptoms of the development of chronic diseases that can have a considerable impact on your health. This is why a health check before or during this age bracket is highly recommended, so you are able to navigate middle age and the future more smoothly.

This detailed check-up may include:

The age range of 40 to 60 years is a crucial time for identifying patient risk factors and offering screening for health conditions where necessary.

Regular checks at your women’s health GP have been demonstrated to improve the management of smoking, nutrition, and physical activity behavioural risk factors, screening for common cancers like ovary, cervical and breast cancer.

You will also be eligible for a Medicare rebate for your 45–49-year-old health check, so you should not put off the check up for any longer. This detailed check assesses your risk of developing chronic diseases, while also evaluating your current state of health to help you make better lifestyle and wellbeing choices.

Specific Health Issues We Cover at Our Women’s Health GP Clinic

Cervical Screening

Did you know that most cervical cancer is largely preventable? Especially if there is early detection and appropriate treatment, resulting in much higher chances of survival. According to Sydney North Health Network, over 80% of cervical cancer is diagnosed in women who have never had screening or are overdue for screening, therefore screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer.

As from December 2017, a new cervical screening test was introduced, which looks for the HPV infection (human papillomavirus) the leading cause of all cervical cancers, and not just for abnormal cells like the previous Pap test.

Breast Cancer Screening

After lung cancer, breast cancer is the second deadliest cancer in Australian women. Early detection (such as self-checks and mammograms) and suitable treatment can significantly improve breast cancer survival.

The Australian Government has a national screening programme in place that invites women from 50 to 74 years to undergo free mammograms every 2 years. However, breast cancer can occur outside of this age bracket, and if this raises any concerns for you, please see a trusted women’s health GP like Shire Doctors.

Your women’s health GP may be able to track your symptoms and start the conversations, but certain conditions may require a referral for specialist treatment and these referrals will be arranged when appropriate.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Are you worried you are at risk of an STI? These silent infections can have devastating long-term effects if left untreated and have been almost undetectable in the past, but nowadays screening is easy.

From a urine sample, blood test or a quick swab at your women’s health GP, detection and diagnosis are important steps in helping to protect yourself and others.

STIs

Antenatal and Postnatal Care

Pregnancy care consists of pre-natal or antenatal (before birth) and post-partum (after birth) healthcare for expectant mothers. It includes training and treatment to ensure a healthy and safe pregnancy, and labour and delivery for the mother and baby.

Mental Health

Often when discussing health care, we tend to gravitate towards physical illnesses or conditions, while mental health is pushed to the side.
