Treatment Risks & Considerations
General Considerations
At Shire Doctors & Dentists, all treatments are delivered by Ahpra-registered practitioners. While we use modern techniques and thorough planning to improve safety, all medical and dental procedures carry some degree of risk. These risks depend on factors like your overall health, anatomy, and the specific treatment you may require.
Dental & Cosmetic Procedures
Dental Implants & All-on-4
- Implant placement involves surgery and may carry risks including infection, implant failure, sinus involvement, or damage to surrounding bone.
- Additional procedures such as bone grafts or sinus lifts may be needed, each with their own considerations.
- Your healing and long-term success are influenced by smoking, general health, and oral hygiene habits.
- Regular maintenance visits are necessary and may involve further expense.
Veneers & Cosmetic Dentistry
- Veneer preparation involves removal of natural enamel, which is permanent and irreversible.
- You may experience increased sensitivity to hot or cold.
- Veneers may chip, crack, or become dislodged—especially if you grind or clench your teeth.
- Future repairs or replacements may be required, potentially at additional cost.
- Alternatives such as whitening or orthodontics may suit your needs better and will be discussed during your consultation.
Dermal Fillers & Injectables
- Fillers can cause temporary side effects like swelling, bruising, infection, or allergic reaction. These typically resolve within a few days but must be discussed upfront.
Other Medical & Surgical Treatments
Conscious Sedation (Twilight Sedation)
- While it helps reduce anxiety during long or complex procedures, sedation can cause temporary drowsiness or disorientation post-treatment. You’ll need someone to drive you home afterward.
Recovery & Aftercare
- Some procedures require downtime, discomfort, or temporary changes to your routine or diet.
- Wound care and follow-up checks are crucial and may involve additional visits or costs (e.g., for sedated or surgical cases).
- Untreated or delayed follow-up can lead to complications.
