45 to 49-Year-Old Health Checks at Your Men’s Health GP

When you are approaching middle age (45 to 49-years), you may be presented with new or additional health challenges. Therefore, we recommend individuals who are in this or approaching this age bracket to come in for a health assessment, with this check-up including:

Unfortunately, a large proportion of middle-aged and older Australian men do not take the time required to take care of themselves by visiting a men’s health GP. Too often, men deny feeling unwell initially and brush it to the side instead of attending to the health problem. Does this sound familiar to you? It might be time for you to go for a general check-up at your trusted men’s health GP.

This health check usually takes under an hour and is highly recommended by major medical bodies, with Shire Doctors and Dentists offering bulk-billed onsite consultations. At this turning point in your life, there is plenty of time to make lifestyle changes that may help prevent the development of chronic illnesses, or at least delay their onset.

Quality Care for Men’s Health

Did you know that research indicates that men are more hesitant to take control of their health and wellbeing when compared to women? This can easily result in an unhealthy lifestyle and the build-up of preventable diseases. As men tend to visit doctors less often than women, at Shire Doctors and Dentists we encourage men to go for regular check-ups with their trusted men’s health GP.

Specific Health Issues We Cover at Our Men’s Health GP Clinic

Prostate Problems

One of the most common form of cancers in men is prostate cancer, and if you ever experience any symptoms you should definitely see a doctor. According to the data gathered in 2020 by Cancer Australia, prostate cancer was the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian males.

However, with Medicare’s subsidisation of annual prostate screening, early detection has resulted in a lower mortality rate. The most popular way to screen for prostate cancer is by taking the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test which is covered by Medicare. If you are looking for a PSA blood test today or would like more information, please book an appointment with Shire Doctors.

Bowel Cancer

Approximately 8,400 Australian men are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year, making it the third deadliest form of cancer. During early stages of bowel cancer, symptoms are not easily identified, which makes screening very important especially in older men.

Testing can be done at home with a kit sent in the mail every 2 years under the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program for 50- to 74-year-old Australians. If you return a positive result you are more than welcome to consult a men’s health GP at Shire Doctors and be given a referral for colonoscopy.

Erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction means not being able to obtain or keep an erection that is sufficient for sexual intercourse. According to Healthy Male Andrology Australia, it is estimated that this problem affects about 1 in 5 men over the age of 40 years.

Many men experience erectile dysfunction from time to time, but if the problem persists you might want to consult a men’s health GP. While getting treated, your doctor will determine the physical and psychological causes and offer tailored solutions to your needs.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STIs)

Sex is part of healthy relationships but also can involve some risk. Common STIs in Australia are chlamydia, genital herpes or warts and gonorrhoea. If you are worried about potential STIs or are showing any symptoms, contact your trusted men’s health GP today.

Cholesterol

High cholesterol levels increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Doctors can determine your levels with a cholesterol or lipid profile blood test.

If you are worried about your cholesterol levels you should try to incorporate a healthy diet, regular exercise, quit smoking or if recommended by a professional, start taking medication.

Diabetes

Diabetes Australia reports around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes, with the chronic condition being more common in men (4.9%), compared to women at 3.8%.

In Australia, we refer to diabetes as the “silent pandemic” because research shows steadily increasing rates. This is likely driven by rising obesity levels, the ageing population, dietary changes, and inactive lifestyles.
